making news this morning, bust up in boston. >> planes collide just before takeoff shaking passengers. why does this keep happening. explosive new details about osama bin laden's plot to blow up air force one much the latest from the trove of intelligence he left behind. and casey anthony's million dollar offer. who is ready to give her a seven-figure check? good morning. bumped and bruised. a rocky start for hundreds off europe-bound passengers in boston. >> their jet collided with a much smaller plane. no one seriously hurt. those on board agreed it could have been much worse. >> yet, this is the second such

accident in the past few months. here's lisa stark. >> reporter: it was a clear evening still light out when the larger delta boeing 767 smacked into the smaller regional jet. both planes were damaged. the 767's wing tip was sliced. the tail of the regional jet badly mangled. >> i was looking out the window, it's funny before, and a saw a plane off to the side and thought t ese planes are pretty close. i wonder if anybody sees. it's those things you hear about. >> could have been a lot worse than it was. we were just grateful no one was hurt. >> reporter: if apparently happened as they were taxing for takeoff. one turned off to a second perpendicular roadway. the jumbo jet was still on that taxiway coming from behind and thought he would clele the smaller plane. he did not. delta says the jumbo jet was heading to amsterdam reportedly with 204 passengers and a crew of 11. the regional jet bound for

raleigh durham, north carolina, reportedly with 74 passengers and 3 crew. one passenger on that small plane complained of a neck injury after the collision. no one else was hurt. this comes just three months after a similar mishap at new york's jfk airport. the dramatic collision there caught on tape as the wing tip of a giant airbus a380 hit the tail of a regional jet and spun it. there were nearly 1,000 runway incidents last year at the nation's airport where planes got too close to each other or vehicles. luckily actual collisions are not common but they are a major safety concern. lisa stark, abc news, washington. and we'll hear more from passengers who were on board those planes coming up on "good morning america." in washington, the president and congressional negotiators are taking a break from the tense budget talks today. but mr. obama will again take his case to the public with his second news conference of the week. there are the slightest t gns of a compromise that might be in the works. it would allow the president to

raise the debt limit while cutting an equal amount in taxes. abc news will broadcast the news conference live at approximately 11:00 a.m. eastern. they put politics side as congressional staffers met for their annual charity baseball game in d.c. the democrats beat the republicans rather soundly, 8-2. nancy pelosi was on hand for the trophy presentation. and a budget impasse that shut down minnesota's government for two weeks is over. meaning thousands of state workers will return to work. the governor and lawmakers have reached an agreement. governor mark dayton says that means the government will re-open "very soon" but he didn't say when. n nonessential operations have been shut down since the 1st of july. abc news learnedew details about osama bin laden's plans to attack the u.s. and high on his hit list, p psident obama. investigators poring over information found in bin laden's pakistan compound say he was plotting to kill the president by shooting down air force one. bin laden was also working on a

diabolical scheme to mark the upcoming tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. martha raddatz has a special report coming up on "good morning america." the fbi is launching its own investigation into the widening hacking scandal involving rupert murdoch. investigators are looking into whether murdoch's new york-based news corp employees tried to access cell phone messages and records of 9/11 victims and their families. murdoch is defending his company to "the wall street journal," a newspaper that he owns saying his executives made only minor mistakes. insanity defense may be in the works for a new york man charged with killing an 8-year-old boy. a judge ordered the suspect to undergo a mental evaluation. levy aron has told attorneys he hears voices and has had hallucinations. jeff pegues has details. >> reporter: no matter how much they hear about the case. >> i don't know how anybody could do that. >> reporter: there are still so many unanswered questions for this community.

there's another warning thi. morning about the u.s. credit rating because of the uncertainty over raising the debt limit. standard & poor's says there's a 50/50 chance it will downgrade the bond rating. moody's issued a similar warning. it will make it more expensive for the government to borrowmon money. > overseas markets are mixed thanks to that warning from the s&p. tokyo's nikkei average lost 38 points today. hong kong's hang seng is down about 80 points. in london, the ftse opened lower. on wall street the dow slipped 54 points yesterday. the nasdaq index fell 34 points.

more time to get rid of the don't ask, don't tell ban on gays in the military. last week a federal appeals court ruled that the policy should end immediately. but now the justice department is asking a court to rethink its decision. congress als rethinking to do after okaying a program that is sending hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars down the drain. thanks to npr we know about loads of unused spare change piling up as the nation stares down its debt. abc's jon karl explains. >> reporter: we took a journey to the u.s. mint in philadelphia for a lesson in how the government is losing money by making money. this is the presidential dollar coin. congress ordered the mint to make millions of them to honor every dead president but nobody seems to want them. they cost 32 cents a pop to make. the mint makes nearly 2 million of them every day. do the math. about 600,000 dollars a day to make them.
